The Sexual and Reproductive Health Outcomes project – known as the Maanda Initiative – was designed to address gender inequalities affecting the health and wellbeing of women and girls in Narok County. Funded by Christian Aid and Comic Relief, the project grew out of an earlier Maternal and Child Health programme supported by the European Union.
In many communities across Narok County, cultural norms and gender inequalities continue to affect the health of women and girls. Harmful practices and limited access to reproductive health information mean that many women are unable to fully exercise their sexual and reproductive health rights.
The project works with communities to recognise and respect the sexual and reproductive health rights of women. It challenges retrogressive cultural practices that undermine family wellbeing and works to shift attitudes and behaviours at both household and community level across 12 community units in Narok South and Narok West sub-counties.
The programme serves women and girls across Narok South and Narok West sub-counties, with a particular focus on communities where harmful cultural practices and gender inequality most significantly impact reproductive health outcomes.
Operating across 12 community units in Narok South and Narok West, the project has worked to shift community attitudes on gender and reproductive health, increase access to reproductive health services and empower women to make informed decisions about their own health.
