Immunization Advocacy Initiative

Program Overview

The Immunization Advocacy Initiative is a project focused on increasing domestic financing for immunization and improving the distribution of vaccines from national to county level in Narok County. Through evidence gathering, champion building and stakeholder engagement, CHP works to ensure immunization is prioritized in county budget planning and decision making.

The Need

When CHP began its engagement in Narok County, local government officials had limited understanding of immunization financing. This meant immunization was consistently overlooked during budget planning. Critical data on immunization expenditure was either unavailable or not being used to inform decisions, leaving a significant gap between what was needed and what was being funded.

What We Do

CHP works on two fronts – gathering evidence and engaging the right stakeholders. An Immunization Tracking Tool was developed to collect real-time data on vaccine service delivery and budget absorption. This data is used to produce fact sheets and policy briefs for decision makers. A community documentary was also produced capturing the voices of facility champions, mothers, healthcare providers and county officials. On the stakeholder side CHP engages the County Governor, Members of County Assembly, Members of Parliament, Ministry of Health officials and county finance teams to build informed champions who advocate for increased immunization funding.

Who We Serve

The programme serves communities across Narok County with a focus on engaging government officials, civil society organizations, health facility champions and community members to collectively advocate for sustained domestic financing of immunization.

Reach and Impact

The advocacy resulted in the Narok County Government doubling its immunization budget from KES 15 million to KES 30 million in the 2020/2021 supplementary budget. 30 health facility champions were trained, 14 Civil Society Organizations made a joint submission to the County Government on immunization financing and 24 public participation forums were held across the county.

Partners

The Immunization Advocacy Initiative is implemented in partnership with the Institute of Public Finance Kenya (IPFK) and engages the Narok County Ministry of Health and Finance departments as key stakeholders.
