Kenya Sanitation and Hygiene Improvement Program

Program Overview

The Kenya Sanitation and Hygiene Improvement Programme (K-SHIP), supported by AMREF, aims to contribute towards poverty eradication, health and environmental improvement, gender equality and long-term social and economic development across Narok County. The project started in 2016 and ran for five years of implementation.

The Need

Open defecation and poor sanitation practices remain serious public health challenges in many parts of Narok County. Without access to proper latrines and hygiene education, communities face increased risk of waterborne diseases, environmental contamination and preventable illness – particularly among children.

What We Do

K-SHIP works directly with communities to sensitize them on improved sanitation and hygiene practices, support the construction of latrines, and help villages achieve open defecation free status. The programme takes a community-led approach, empowering local leaders and households to take ownership of their own sanitation improvements.

Who We Serve

The programme targets rural communities across Narok County including vulnerable populations who lack basic sanitation access. It works with villages, households and community leaders to drive lasting behaviour change around sanitation and hygiene.

Reach and Impact

K-SHIP set out to reach 30,000 people with sensitization on improved sanitation and hygiene, move 80,000 people from open defecation to basic latrines, support 50,000 people with basic latrines to access improved sanitation, provide sanitation access to 5,000 vulnerable people, and support 70 villages to become open defecation free.
